About Marc by Sofia

An intimate, unconventional portrait of Marc Jacobs, crafted by Sofia Coppola to capture the genius and singular universe of the iconic American designer.

Marc Jacobs met Sofia Coppola in New York City in the early 1990s. The Jacobs-Coppola bond grew and flourished across the decade and into Y2K, as both channeled the spirit of their times in different yet deeply connected ways. While Jacobs was creating looks and styles that would define a generation of young women coming of age between grunge and Gossip Girl, Coppola released her feature debut, The Virgin Suicides, in 1999: a classic of restless adolescence which Jacobs celebrated in his Heaven diffusion line years later.

By the turn of the century, their paths were firmly entwined, with Coppola appearing as the face of Jacobs’ Daisy fragrance in a campaign photographed by Jürgen Teller. With his Marc by Marc Jacobs diffusion line, launched in 2001, Jacobs achieved global commercial success; two years later, Coppola won the Academy Award for Best Screenplay for her second feature, Lost in Translation.

Marc by Sofia marks the first documentary feature by Coppola, and while it captures Jacobs at work, in his element, designing his Spring 2024 ready-to-wear collection, reflecting on the people and pop culture that shaped him, from The Supremes to The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant, it’s also quintessentially Coppola in its collage-like approach to showcasing her friend’s deep, abiding — and shared — reverence for fashion, contemporary art, and youth culture.

A portrait of two kindred spirits working at the top of their game, supporting each other creatively through the years and drawing closer through their mutual passions, Marc by Sofia is a charming and loving tribute to what it means to stay up all night talking on the phone about Fassbinder, Fosse, and Fiorucci with that one special person in your life who just gets it.
