The MOP Talks: Anna Sui

A CONVERSATION BETWEEN ANNA SUI AND ILEEN GALLAGHER

On Monday March 2 at 7.00 pm, the MOP Center will host American fashion designer Anna Sui in conversation with producer Ileen Gallagher.

Since making her runway debut in 1991, Anna Sui has become one of New York’s most renowned fashion designers. From her iconic collections inspired by the hippie and grunge spirit to her beloved baby-doll dresses, Sui's collections defined the fashion of the 1990s.

At the end of the event, Anna Sui will sign 100 copies of her new book The Nineties x Anna Sui (Rizzoli, 2025). The book will be available for purchase (one copy per person) along with ticket reservations.

ANNA SUI

Anna Sui premiered her first runway show in 1991, and since then her activity has expanded from ready-to-wear to accessories, cosmetics, and fragrances. As an independent brand run by a woman, she has established herself as one of the most beloved and accomplished fashion designers. Sui has received numerous awards, including the CFDA Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent (1992) & the CFDA Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award (2009). She has published three books, ANNA SUI by Andrew Bolton (2010), THE WORLD OF ANNA SUI by Tim Blanks (2017) and THE NINETIES X ANNA SUI (2025). Her work was featured in the exhibition “The World of Anna Sui,” which has been shown in cities such as London, Tokyo, New York, Shanghai, Ft. Lauderdale, Charlotte, Phoenix and More. A passionate advocate for New York’s Garment District, Sui has located her business and produced fashion lines in New York City for the past forty years.

It was the last analog decade, a time when DIY aesthetics, fanzines, and landlines were part of daily life. This book goes deep —in the designer's own words— into her extravagant fashion shows and the many inspirations that shaped her clothes, situated at the epicenter of the fashion world.A self-taught historian of culture, art, and fashion, Sui samples music, books, movies, photography, and art in her designs. From the iconic slip dresses donned by the “it girls” of the moment, like Winona Ryder and pop icon Madonna, to the Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love's favorite baby-doll dresses baby-doll dresses favored by Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, each chapter details the defining moments and trends of the era, ranging from the rebellious energy of punk, grunge, and rock, to the ethos behind her preppy and vintage-inspired designs.
